Where Creativity Meets Reality: Our Story

Jordan Courtney edge is a popfitie and street artist better known by the cheeky moniker ‘Smirk’ his tag of painted dripping lips was bore from the artists feeling of his idea that “ humans are savage in nature, no matter how much you try to dress it up, to disguise it, a smirk is society’s true face, a parody of life…    a joke.” Jordan explains “ I’ve always tried to bring light to past and present ideas and issues that have been overlooked or even been forgotten, so society won’t make the same mistakes as they did before”. He also explains that no subject or issue is to taboo or off limits for him. “ Because no matter how bad or wrong the subject or issue, it’s apart of humanity’s history.” “ Having smirk as a nickname is a bit of a joke “, Jordan confesses, “ but it’s a license to have fun with dark and bleak imagery, it reflects the darkness that’s in the world right now. You can’t just ignore it and do a nice picture of a unicorn, unless it’s a unicorn snorting a line of cocaine with a rocket launcher on its head.” Jordan was born in South West London, and studied fine art painting in university of the arts London. After graduating he was living in London and working as one of the designers for a clothing label called Anarchist Assemble. He was producing t-shirt graphics and worked in a lot of London’s cocktail bars also. As a direct result he became more attracted to pop culture, but he has always retained his sense of where he came from. Jordan’s popfitie idea began at the end of 2011, where he would paint controversial images wile adding general pop culture to his unique graffiti style, heavily influenced by graffiti and pop art artists like la rat, king robbo, Peter Blake and Andy worhole. But at the end of 2011, Jordan tiered of London life and decided to go travelling. He returned to London at the start of 2014, and began painting with a new appreciation of London. “ I started to miss London wile I was away.” He explains, “ it’s a dirty place, but it’s the kind of dirt that makes things grow.” Jordan entered into London’s rat race again, and started producing dark new prints and artwork, and in the past 3 years he has exhibited worldwide in Africa, Costa Rica, Panama, USA and all over Europe. He also spent time mentoring troubled children and regularly gives workshops in street art. Wile mentoring troubled kids, that’s when Jordan, all though still continues to produce his own artwork, wanted to give back to the city that has nurtured his unique creativity. For the duration of 2017 Jordan embarked on a ambitious project, Smirk Gallery, promising himself he would focus his efforts on helping London’s youth and artists by giving them a platform to showcase their work to the world, and to give them opportunities that he wished he had, being a young dyslexic artist. Through to 2020 things were going better then he could dream, but then Covid Hit and the Popup Venues started to disappear and Jordan found himself struggling and fell into Depression. It affected him for many years being unable to produce new works of art. Until in 2023, Jordan started to create new works exploring Depression and started to paint his own experiences and feelings through his own artistic style.
